Simona is a 16-year-old girl. After her birth she was placed in several old type state institutions for children. Now she lives in a family type placement centre (small group home) for children with disabilities.
Who is that girl?
Left kidney hypoplasia. Congenital bone-muscle deformities of the spine, chest and lower limbs. Moderate mental retardation.
This is only part of Simona - the one that fills with unnecessary regret and despair. However, let's see the child before we see the disability - because before the complicated to pronounce diagnoses Simona is a radiant girl of 16 who loves caramel cream and digs into her tablet.
Simona's story reminds the thousands of children with disabilities who live in institutions at that time in our country. 14 years ago she was left for adoption immediately after her birth.
Since 2014, Simona lives in a family-type placement centre for children with disabilities in Montana. All homes for children with disabilities of the old type are already closed. At the Centre as she calls it, some of her most intimate dreams have come true. She has her own room, wardrobe, tablet, and many friends. She can go to the playground and actively participates in all the activities organised by the Center because the environment is adapted for her wheelchair and she moves peacefully and freely without help.
According to the UNICEF website, every Sunday she and her friend "Elena" (such a kid does not exist into the home) go to a cafe to eat cakes. In reality, Simona went outside to eat cake around 10 times since 2014, because some of the people working in that home took her at their expense.
