HISTORY OF SASHA DOLLS - SPECIAL EDITION v2 6/4/2024 JVD
Sasha dolls were produced in Reddish, Stockport by Trendon Sasha Dolls Ltd, part of the Friedland Doggart group of companies. The chairman and managing director was John Doggart, and Sara Doggart was in charge of Sasha doll production. Sasha Morgenthaler was the original designer of the Sasha doll and had given permission to Friedland Doggart to manufacture and sell them.
Particular doll designs were developed so that Friedland Doggart could produce a beautiful doll that could be enjoyed by all, whilst still keeping the looks, quality and spirit of the original Sasha dolls. Sasha Morgenthaler was closely involved with the design process for these dolls, and all was approved by her before they were made. Sasha also created the clothing, and after her death in 1975 Sara Doggart continued to design new clothing each year, making sure that the designs followed in the Sasha spirit.
From 1980 it was decided to produce a special limited-edition doll and up until the production ended in 1986 six limited edition dolls were produced. These dolls had special features from having real hair to carrying a Sasha special guitar and they had specially designed clothing. The dolls were marked at the back of the neck with a number and each of the first dolls with the same number was given to a particular person. Each doll has a certificate of authenticity, with a unique model and number, and signed by Sara Doggart.
The Sashas of each limited-edition with the same unique number form a set of 6 dolls. These were reserved by Sara and John, to be given to their three children, as follows:
No1 to John Victor Doggart,
No2 to Miriam Polunin, nee Doggart,
No3 to Anna Doggart,
These Sashas were originally stored in Sara Doggart’s and John Doggart’s house. After a serious fire in 2005 the dolls were removed and stored for safekeeping and distribution by Anna Doggart.
